In times plagued with dissatisfaction in health provision and inequality of distribution, Apple are launching their own healthcare facility, AC Wellness, initially for the sole use of its employees. Following in the footsteps of Amazon and JP Morgan who have also recently launched a new healthcare venture, Apple are aiming to provide the ‘worlds best healthcare’ in their two primary care clinics at Apple’s Valley Green complex in Santa Clara, California.
This new kind of healthcare will aim to promote healthy lifestyles and focus on disease prevention which is much more cost effective than the treatment of disease. Through psychotherapeutic interventions, promotion of spiritual health and good sleep, AC Wellness aims to reduce chronic disease and strengthen the lifestyles of all their employees. Additionally, they will hire health partners to provide one to one patient coaching and clinical exercise coaches to issue ‘fitness prescriptions’.
AC Wellness clinics will provide both emergency and primary care. Additionally, they will test new health related products such as ‘carekit’ and ‘researchkit’. It has been widely published that Apple are already involved in research projects with Stanford university to use Apple watches to detect cardiac arrhythmias and have been developing non-invasive blood glucose monitoring.
The company are advertising on recruitment websites such as indeed.com for a team emphasising qualities such as ‘enthusiasm for new methods of care delivery’ suggesting they will be pushing telemedicine and focussing more on life coaching than the more traditional delivery of healthcare.
“achieve the highest level of patient satisfaction”
Medical school training, particularly in the UK, lacks any education on nutrition. As people begin to take more interest in their health and current methods of healthcare delivery begin to face extreme pressures perhaps this needs to change. It seems that Apple could be the driving force behind making this a priority. They are hiring individuals with experience in both nutrition and physical activity, breaking the mould of traditional physicians.
Is it time we follow Apples lead and take responsibility for our own health by making permanent changes to our lifestyles?
