Sugba Lagoon is a peaceful sanctuary of crystal clear waters hidden behind a network of mangrove forests and narrow passageways. The area is regularly frequented by locals and tourists yet remains pristine due to conservation efforts of the local Del Carmen community.
To get there you can either join an organised tour from one of the many resorts in General Luna or travel the 45 minutes by scooter through Dapa to Del Carmen where the locals will happily direct you to the tourist centre. From there you hire a private boat to take you to the lagoon, it is a fixed price per boat which can seat up to 8 people and the journey takes you twenty minutes north west of the mainland. There is often other people at the dock to share a boat with if you are a small group. The journey is epic, you’ll pass almost 4000 hectares of mangroves and get to see the small fishing communities who have made the remote forest their home.
You’ll dock at the two-storey Cubo where you’ll be greeted by the friendly locals who will show you to your own picnic table, available to rent for only 50 pesos for the whole day. It is a good idea to stop by the local fish market to grab some tuna to cook on the barbecue once you arrive. Beers are available to buy and you can rent SUP’s or kayaks to freely explore the lagoon, snorkel amongst the corals or simply relax on the veranda and soak up the sun.
